OK now we've decided on where the tattoo is going and we've decided on colour or mono pigmentation.

The next step is to think about shading, reverse and shadow characteristics.

Often these considerations make all the difference between what looks like a stock image and something really special.

Now not all tattoo artists practice every method and you wouldn't ask an oil painter to prepare you a water colour so be clear about your thoughts and if there are any signs of uncertainty walk away, think it through, and either find a satisfactory middle ground or find another artist.

The best way to ensure you get the result you want is to check out the artists portfolio to ensure they are well practiced with your particular requirements.
