Once you know where you want your tattoo & before you consider
any artwork try to decide on whether you want a full colour tattoo
or a mono tattoo.
Shading and shadow are explained in a different section so for now
try to simply consider what colour(s) you would like.
COLOUR
If you decide on 2, 3, 4 or more colours it's important to remember
that over time these are likely to age and fade. UV rays from the
sun will affect the long term quality of your tattoo and so too will
your aftercare routine.
Speak to your artist (who are usually tattooed themselves), and check
out how their tattoos have aged especially in areas more likely to
have seen daylight regularly. Do some comparisons and make sure your
happy with the outcome.

MONO
If you decide on a single colour and it's usually
black the considerations are basically the same as for multiple colours.
Not all blacks are the same with long term fading
& UV stability differing between brands. So do your research and
speak to the artist, they will be pleased to talk to you about which
black they use, provide samples and portfolio shots for you to browse
through.
Don't accept anything that your not sure about or
happy with as lesser quality black inks can turn 'green' after lengthy
exposure to the sun.
